RE: INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUNG INVENTORS CHALLENGE (YIC) 2020

It is with great pleasure, on behalf of Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI); we would like to invite students from your schools to take part in Young Inventors Challenge 2020. The challenge is team based and the team members can come from multiple schools. The prestigious event is based on proposals received, and the shortlisted best proposals will be chosen by more than 100 expert judges. These teams will then be invited to participate in the grand finale.

The Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI) is a non-governmental and non-profit oriented organization (NGO) working towards empowering young childrens’ interest in science through the act of doing where learning is achieved from discovering scientific principles themselves. In order to achieve this vision we have experimented with various projects and have successfully gained traction on programmes such as the Science Fair for Young Children (SFYC), Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), Creative and Critical Thinking Camp (CCTC), ASTI Leap Challenge  (ALC), “On the Wings of Fire Series” and ASTI outreach programmes. Please refer to our website www.asti.org.my for more information regarding our projects.

In particular, YIC requires teams of up to 3-5 members to put their minds together and come up with an invention. The purpose of the programme is to build and encourage the creative and inventive capability of young people. We started this programme in 2013 as a pilot where 12 teams participated from 12 schools and the response have been remarkable ever since – we have been growing almost exponentially with over 150 shortlisted teams participating every year.

YIC teams are then provided training using videos and Facebook live from our expert trainers and innovators. We see YIC as the first step for budding inventors to go on and be inventors and innovators of the future. Hence former YIC participants have won many other awards in other international arena. Last year we had applicants from over 10 countries including China, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and many more.

Among the many achievements in running YIC for the past seven consecutive years are:

  • The phenomenal participation growth includes international schools from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Vietnam, Timor Leste and China.
  • In 2017, 2018 and 2019, YIC received international recognition from the Malaysian Ministry of Education.
  • YIC continually reaches out to participants from more countries.
  • YIC was shortlisted from over 1509 educational educators from 39 countries by QS rating agency for the Reimagine Education Award.

This year, YIC 2020 will be our 8th year and we would like to expand the competition even wider to invite more teams from various countries. The theme for this year is “SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)” and the guidelines for participation are shown below:
