Association of Science Technology and Innovation conducted its first ever ASTI Leap Challenge (ALC) with the support of YAYASAN HASANAH. This project is fully funded by Yayasan Hasanah.
The project comprises of 3 trainings and a competition in the initial year. This pilot project is done in 2 regions, northern and southern region. Schools from Penang and kedah have participated in the northern region for this project. Meanwhile, schools from Johor will participate in ASTI Leap Challenge in southern region. Each school will be represented by 5 students and 2 teachers. ASTI Leap Challenge is a programme held for PT3 students. The main objective of this programme is to give an introduction to the students the world of technology and innovation. By participating in this event the students will enhance their creative and critical thinking skills to be able to solve complex problems which is expressed by ‘doing’.
The objectives of the projects are as per below:
The programme prepares and encourages the students to participate in various National and International competitions with various invention ideas and self-confidence.
Upon participating in ASTI Leap Challenge, the schools should be able to conduct the competition in their schools as an annual event which will involve more students. The school should be able to participate in various national and international invention competitions. After the success of the project in the regional level, for the following year, we will encourage and provide seed funding for the schools to conduct their own competition at the school level. This way more students will benefit from the project.
ASTI Leap Challenge is a project meant for PT3 students. We are targeting band 4 and band 5 schools for this project. Since the schools fall under band 4 & 5, which are the academically lower performing schools and there are fewer activities and opportunities given to them, ASTI would like to conduct a more “hands-on” ASTI Leap Challenge. It will prepare them to participate in higher level competitions.
We have targeted 20 schools from Penang and Kedah in the northern region and another 20 schools from Johor in the southern region. The students who are eligible to participate in the programme are Form 3 students in year 2016. Each selected school has to send a team of 5 Form 3 students and 2 teachers who will participate throughout the whole programme.
ASTI have approached Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang and Kedah to provide us with the list of band 4 and band 5 schools in their respective states.
Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Kedah selected band 4 and 5 schools from Kedah and sent invitation letter to the schools to participate in ASTI Leap Challenge. Whereas Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Pulau Pinang provided us the list of band 4 and 5 schools and we have sent invitation letter to these schools.
ASTI Leap Challenge’s first training was held on 22nd October 2016 at Disted College, Penang. The second training for the programme was held on 19th November 2016. Just the day before on 18th November 2016, we held the first training again at Disted College, Penang for schools that could not attend the first training on 22nd October 2016. The 3rd and final ALC Training in northern region is scheduled to be held on 18th January 2017 at again at Disted College, Penang. The ASTI Leap Challenge Final in northern region is set to be held in April 2017.
